travel fair offering train tickets at discounted prices went awry on Saturday as thousands of people were denied entry to the Jakarta Convention Center, the venue for the event.
The fair, held for the first time by state-owned railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) from July 29 to July 30, offers discounts of up to 75 percent on tickets for the executive class.
The event, however, turned ugly after attendees tried to break into the backup entrance when the queue lengthened.
When the backup door was opened, visitors pushed each other, causing some of them, mostly women, to scream loudly. Many of them almost stumbled and fell.
"Open the door!" visitors yelled as they banged on the door.

Security guards also yelled back to the visitors, loudly reminding them to be more patient.
Alas, this was to no avail, because the visitors kept pushing each other. (wnd/wit)
