he West Java contingent took home the title of overall champions of the 14th edition of the National Student Games, held in Semarang from Sept. 10 to 20. West Java secured 58 gold, 45 silver and 54 bronze medals. With the achievement, the province wins the honors for the second consecutive year, having been crowned the overall champions of the 2016 Games in West Java.
This year’s Games was attended by 6,200 student athletes from 34 provinces across the archipelago. Second place was secured by DKI Jakarta with 56 gold, 44 silver and 43 bronze, while host province Central Java secured third place, winning 40 gold, 39 silver and 55 bronze.
East Java came in fourth with 33 gold, 29 silver and 48 bronze, while fifth-place Riau tallied 14 gold, 15 silver and 15 bronze.
Youth and Sports Ministry secretary Gatot S. Dewobroto, who attended the closing ceremony, said he appreciated the host province for its efforts in organizing the Games.
“I appreciated the extra efforts that were made amid tight funding,” he said. The next National Student Games will be held in Papua.
