looding at Kemayoran underpass, Central Jakarta, was the result of a poor drainage system because of ongoing apartment construction work in the area, an official has said.

"The construction sites in the area do not yet have a drainage system, hence there was flooding at Kemayoran underpass,” said Jakarta’s Water Resource Agency head Teguh Hendarwan on Wednesday as quoted by tempo.co.

On both Monday and Tuesday, Kemayoran underpass was inundated by rainwater between 60 and 170 centimeters high, making it difficult for vehicles to access the underpass that connects Jl. Dakota and Jl. Sunter Raya.

Teguh added that the agency had deployed a team to deal with the flooding on Monday. By 4 a.m. on Wednesday, the team had finished pumping water out of the underpass.

The agency had also prepared a water pump in anticipation of further flooding at the underpass.

Previously, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan blamed the construction of the mass rapid transit and light rail transit projects for the flooding at several city thoroughfares on Monday, as the projects obstructed waterways. (agn)
