raft suspect Setya Novanto stayed silent with a bent head when judges asked him his name during the first hearing of his e-ID case at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Wednesday.
Setya appeared to be weak during the hearing. After the court’s judge panel announced that the hearing was temporarily sent into recess because Setya wanted to go to the restroom, the defendant was seen speaking with one of his lawyers, Maqdir Ismail.
When the hearing was resumed, presiding judge Yanto asked Setya: “I saw you were able to whisper and nod just now. Now I want to ask you [a question] again, and please just answer me by at least nodding.”
“Is your name Setya Novanto?” the judge asked as part of a routine series of questions.
“I have been suffering from diarrhea for four or five days," Setya said in response.
“I had asked for medicine but doctors did not give me any. There were witnesses [who saw doctors refusing to give me medicine],” Setya continued.
Setya’s statements were immediately brushed off by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutor Irene Putrie, who said that the defendant was healthy at around 8 a.m. before the hearing started.
Irene said that Setya had complained about being sick last Friday because of a cough, not because of diarrhea.
Irene said a team of doctors had confirmed that Setya was healthy enough to attend the hearing. (ebf)
