T

he Jakarta Environment Agency has procured new cleaning and sanitation equipment in a bid to ensure the capital is tidy during the 2018 Asian Games.

Five municipalities in the city have been provided with the equipment.

The agency's head of infrastructure and facilities, Hari Nugroho, said the agency had procured 25 large street sweepers, six small street sweepers, 25 garbage trucks and five wheel loaders.

The agency also procured 1,000 motorcycle carts to collect garbage in each community unit to replace the conventional carts.

“We’ve also procured 22 VIP toilet buses, including two that are specially designed for the disabled,” Hari said in a statement on Thursday.

The toilets are equipped with air conditioners, two rooms, sitting water closets, hand basins and generator sets.

“We want to ensure that Jakarta is ready to host the Asian Games. The high quality toilets shall be provided for the sake of the nation’s pride. Later, the toilets can be used for other events, such as Car Free Day,” he added.

Meanwhile, the head of the agency, Isnawa Adji, said he expected that the city's cleanliness could be improved with the new equipment.

“We want to be equal with other developed cities in the world,” Isnawa said.

Isnawa added that the agency would procure air quality monitoring stations next year given that fresh air would be crucial for Asian Games athletes.

The stations will be added to the existing ones at Hotel Indonesia Traffic Circle, Central Jakarta; Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta; Lubang Buaya, West Jakarta and Kebun Jeruk, West Jakarta.
