View all search resultsfter being hit by annual floods owing to a broken dike, residents of Jati Padang, South Jakarta named their concrete dike after Governor Anies Baswedan in a show of gratitude after the governor approved the construction of a new dike for neighborhood unit 3.
“Previous governors never really tried to help us solve the annual flooding problem,” said community unit head Arief Syarifuddin on Thursday.
Sandbags had been placed around the collapsed dike in October. However, as rain intensified, the sandbags failed to prevent flooding in November and December.
Therefore, the city decided to build a concrete dike, which has been named Tanggul Baswedan. The construction is expected to be completed next week.
Meanwhile, Anies said earlier that he did not expect the gesture from residents.
“I was just acting responsibly,” Anies said.
