he Jakarta administration finally began clearing a 546 square-meter area for the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project on Jl. Fatmawati in South Jakarta on Friday morning, after the Supreme Court approved a cassation appeal filled by the administration and annulled a verdict issued by the South Jakarta High Court relating to the required amount of compensation for the land.
According to a wartakota.tribunnews.com report, the land clearance began on Friday morning at 8 a.m. Heavy equipment was deployed to tear down buildings in the area, without resistance from residents.
South Jakarta Mayor Tri Kurniadi said the administration had paid out Rp 30 million (US$2,100) per square-meter for the land, as stipulated in the Supreme Court decision on the matter, which was issued on Oct. 10.
Previously, the South Jakarta High Court verdict stipulated that the administration should pay Rp 60 million per square-meter to the land owners. The owners themselves previously set a price tag of Rp 150 million per one square-meter for their land.
Because of the land dispute, the ongoing construction of an elevated MRT station in the area was delayed. While the six other elevated stations had reached 55 percent completion by August, the elevated station in the area had only reached 36 percent completion.(vny)
