T

en teenagers were arrested in Petukangan Utara subdistrict, South Jakarta, on Friday after they were allegedly caught carrying weapons intended for a brawl

Police seized from them weapons such as sickles, machetes and katanas.

South Jakarta Police chief  Sr. Comr. Mardiaz Kusin said the teenagers were arrested during Operasi Cipta Kondisi (Cipta Kondisi Public Safety Operation), organized by the Pesanggrahan District Police.

“The operation targets [people carrying] guns, sharp weapons, explosives, alcoholic beverages and narcotics,” he said as quoted by tempo.co.

Mardiaz added that many teenagers wandered around late at night during semester breaks, making them prone to getting involved in gang brawls.

“We also anticipate street violence, such as theft and illegal motorcycle racing.”

On Thursday night, the Pesanggrahan District Police inspected Jl. R.C. Veteran, Bintaro, Jl. Deplu Raya, Jl. Pesanggrahan Raya, Jl. M. Saidi Raya, Jl. Ciledug Raya, Jl. Ulujami Raya, Jl. Bintaro Permai, Jl. Kesehatan Raya, Jl. Cempaka Raya and Jl. Bintaro Utara, all of which are in South Jakarta.

In anticipating the year-end holiday season, Mardiaz has ordered his officers to map out potential crimes and delinquency in each area.

Police have also heightened their sense awareness for potential terror acts and disturbances in public places and religious centers.

They have also approached various groups to warn them against being involved in brawls and other illegal activities. (gis)
