ational Police traffic division chief Insp.Gen.Royke Lumowe said there would be a sharp increase in the number of vehicles returning to Jakarta on Tuesday.
“People will return to Jakarta on Tuesday because they have to go back to work,” he said as quoted by tempo.co on Monday.
Royke said New Year holiday traffic would peak on Jan.1, when holidaymakers would return to Jakarta.
Royke said congestion would occur at the Cikarang and Jagorawi tollgates on both days. He said the National Police were coordinating with the chiefs of traffic police in areas across Central Java.
Officers will be deployed to manage traffic prior, during and after New Year celebrations.
The Transportation Ministry estimates that the number of vehicles during the Christmas holiday will be higher than in the previous year. The number of vehicles passing through the Cikarang tollgate is expected to reach 71,000, 0.18 percent more than in 2016.
Meanwhile, the number of vehicles at New Year’s is expected to increase 3.11 percent from 2016. Around 70,000 vehicles are expected to pass through the Cikarang tollgate. (ami/ebf)
