oreign Minister Retno Marsudi is to lay the first stone of a new ASEAN Secretariat building in South Jakarta on Friday.

The new building is to have two 16-floor towers.

“The towers will be built with a Betawi cultural theme,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arrmanatha Nasir told reporters on Thursday.

He said the current building, which has been used since the 1970s, was old and not presentable enough to hold international meetings.

Arrmanatha estimated the buildings would cost about Rp 500 billion (US$37.3 million) and construction would take 395 working days.

“This can be considered as our present for ASEAN’s 50th anniversary,” he said. “With better facilities for the ASEAN Secretariat office, we hope ASEAN meetings can be focused in one location instead of different places. It will also bring visitors to Jakarta.”
