S

everal locations in Jakarta will be prepared for people who wish to view the total lunar eclipse on Jan. 31, while Muslims are encouraged to perform prayers during the event.

The capital and all regions throughout the archipelago can watch the eclipse in the evening, according to the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (Lapan).

“We have prepared locations for the public to see the event on Jan. 31 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.,” Jakarta Tourism Agency head Tinia Budiati said Wednesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

Some of the locations are: Taman Ismail Marzuki Planetarium, Monas, Setu Babakan, Fatahilah Square, Thousand Islands and Taman Mini Indonesia Indah.

However, Tinia could not confirm whether people will be required to pay to enter some of the locations. “I will ask the governor on that matter,” she said.

LAPAN’s researcher Gunawan Admiranto said the lunar eclipse could be seen on Jan. 31 beginning at 6:48 p.m. for a partial eclipse, and from 7:51 p.m. to 9:07 p.m. for the total eclipse.

Separately, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has ordered related agencies to prepare the viewing locations and informed schools to tell students about the total lunar eclipse.

Meanwhile, mosques in the city were also encouraged to conduct shalat gerhana (eclipse prayers) during the time. (wnd)
