West Jakarta police shot dead a motorbike theft suspect and arrested three others in Kembangan on Monday.

The dead suspect identified as HR was allegedly part of a begal (violent thief) group from Lampung who always carried guns.

The three arrested suspects were identified as Tamrin, M. Apipudin and Zaenal Abidin.

Police chief Sr. Comr. Hengki Haryadi said HR had resisted arrest when the police shot him in Kembangan, West Jakarta.

“The [alleged] perpetrators can steal at least 10 motorbikes per day and they will not hesitate to shoot their victims,” Hengki said Tuesday, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

According to Hengky, the group often carried out their alleged crimes in the middle of the night in West Jakarta and sold the stolen motorbikes outside Jakarta.

“They usually steal [motorbikes] from midnight to 6 a.m. But recently they did that during working hours,” he said.

The police seized seven motorbikes, assembled firearms, .38 caliber bullets and a T-key.

“They each face a sentence of up to 20 years in prison,” Hengki said. (wnd)
