T

he Jakarta Police have said it will consider launching an investigation to determine whether Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan’s decision to close Jl. Jatibaru Raya in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, to accommodate street vendors violates the law.

Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said his institution had yet to make a decision on the matter. “We will make an announcement later, as we will have a discussion first,” Argo said on Friday.

He said representatives of the Cyber Indonesia organization, arguing that the governor had violated the law, reported Anies on Thursday night over the road closure.

The organization was established in January last year and comprises advocates, entrepreneurs and students interested in “the supervision of social issues”.

The organization claimed the governor had violated Law No. 38/2004 on roads, which prohibits activities that interfere with the functions of the road. Those violating the law could face 18 months in prison and a fine of Rp 1.5 billion (US$105,000).
