T

he National Narcotics Agency (BNN) is set to get a new leader as President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has reportedly picked a replacement for Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso, who will retire in March.

“The President will decide the name of the new BNN chief,” presidential spokesman Johan Budi Saptopribowo told reporters on Wednesday.

National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian had reportedly submitted three names to the President for his consideration.

However, Johan refused to disclose the submitted names. He went on to say that the President made the decision based on thorough evaluation and also input from his aides, including the National Police chief.

“The best criteria would be [someone] professional, has high integrity, good track record and courageous,” Johan added.

Budi was inaugurated in September 2015 by then-National Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti.

Several high-ranking police officers had been touted to replace Budi, including Budi’s deputy, Insp. Gen Arman Depari, current National Police Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) head Comr. Gen. Ari Dono Sumanto, the National Police’s chief operating assistant, M. Iriawan and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK)’s law enforcement deputy, Insp. Gen. Heru Winarko. (sha/rin)
