A

round 50 residents of Pari Island, Thousand Islands regency, protested in front of City Hall on Wednesday, urging Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan to revoke land ownership certificates (SHMs) and right to build certificates (SHGBs) used by parties to claim ownership of the island.

Previously, the Indonesian Ombudsman's Jakarta office stated that it found a case of maladministration when the North Jakarta Land Agency issued 62 SHMs to individuals and 14 SHGBs to PT Bumi Griyanusa and PT Bumi Pari Asri.

Both companies claimed to own 90 percent of the island.

The acting head of the ombudsman's Jakarta office, Dominikus Dalu, said the issuance of the certificates should be evaluated and an internal audit should be conducted at the land agency.

In the previous week, the residents protested in front of the land agency office, demanding that it revoke the certificates. As they had yet to receive a formal response to their demand, they decided to protest in front of City Hall on Wednesday.

One of the protesters, Ujen, said that if Anies did not meet with them, the protests would continue.

“We will stay here until we’re asked to leave. We will sleep here if necessary,” Ujen said on Wednesday according to tempo.co.

Ujen said the residents departed from the island at 10 p.m. They slept in Kaliadem, Muara Angke, and headed to City Hall to protest at 8 a.m. (cal)
