akarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Idham Azis said a  joint team would investigate the cause of death of two children, MJ and AR, who reportedly died during an event at National Monument (Monas) Park on Sunday.

“The joint team, comprising personnel from the Central Jakarta Police and Jakarta Police’s general crimes directorate, is set to work on the case,” he said as reported by kompas.com on Wednesday.

According to their latest investigation, Idham added, the case may not be related to the event. It was a pesta rakyat (people’s party) held by Forum Untukmu Indonesia in which the committee distributed free staple food packages. Hundreds of people jostled while lining up, causing several women to faint.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono also said on Monday, “MJ and AR fainted in Monas but their condition may have not been a result of the event.”

“They were rushed to Tarakan Hospital [in Central Jakarta] to receive medical treatment. They were severely dehydrated and had high temperatures. MJ died at 7:40 p.m.,” Argo added.

Details on AR’s death have not been released.

Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno, meanwhile, said on Monday that MJ and AR had died after attending the event under the instruction of a community unit officer in Pademangan, North Jakarta. (vla)
