T

ransportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi found weighty words to announce that Kertajati International Airport in Majalengka in West Java will soon begin operations, just in time to help people travel to their hometowns for the Idul Fitri holidays.

“A historical landing is scheduled to be conducted on May 24,” Budi said in Cirebon, West Java, on Sunday, as reported by kompas.com.

The airport is also expected to serve pilgrimage flights to Mecca two months after.

Meanwhile, the grand launching was scheduled for June, Budi said, adding that state-owned PT Angkasa Pura (AP II) was now making preparations for the operation of the airport, construction of which started in 2016.

“We are trying to have Kertajati International Airport start operations to support the Idul Fitri exodus. State-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura (AP II) is doing its job,” Budi said.

Kertajati International Airport is located some 200 kilometers from Jakarta. Its development cost an estimated Rp 2.1 trillion (US$153.7 million). Combined with its operational costs, total investment in the new airport will be about Rp 2.6 trillion.

The airport’s developer, PT Bandara Internasional Jawa Barat (BIJB), is owned by the province of West Java. (bbn)
