Guess what: Marcella makes film about Aceh admiral

ilm producer Marcella Zalianty says her production house is making a biopic of Keumalahayati, one of the world’s most legendary fleet admirals.

Kompas.com reported that the biopic would be based on a recently released comic about Keumalahayati, a female fleet admiral from Aceh whose sea battles against Dutch, English and Portuguese fleets in the 16th century made her a naval legend.

Marcella said the film would be directed by senior filmmaker Eros Djarot and the script would be written by Rayya Makarim and novelist Es Ito.

She added that she believed the film was important because, despite Keumalahayati’s legendary status among fleet admirals, not many young Indonesians knew about her.

“Keumalahayati also inspires women like me to become self-determined.”
