T

he Kupang Police in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), with support from its provincial counterpart, have recovered the abducted son of Kupang prosecutor Kundrat Mantolas and arrested his alleged kidnappers, some 30 hours after the 4-year-old was first taken.

Two men were arrested at different locations in relation to the case.

“One of the suspects was arrested in Kupang, while another one was apprehended outside the city. We also found the kidnapped child in Malaka regency,” Kupang Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Anthon Nugroho told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

The suspects have been identified as 38-year-old CN and 40-year-old RK.

Kundrat’s son Richard was reportedly abducted in front of his home in Kupang on Tuesday.

“The two suspects are residents of Kefamenanu district. They reportedly kidnapped the child as RK was about to be named a suspect in a bribery case related to a project that is being handled by Kunrad, the child’s father, who heads the special crime investigation division at the Kefamenanu Prosecutors’ Office,” Anthon said.

Meanwhile, CN is reportedly part of a gang based in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, which was allegedly hired by RK to kidnap Richard.

The police rescued Richard from the house of one of RK's relatives in Malaka regency and returned him to his family on Tuesday evening.

Both suspects will be charged with Article 83 of Law No. 35/2018 on child protection, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years. (dpk/ebf)
