T

he Depok General Elections Commission (KPU) has been distributing free fried tofu to all participating voters in an effort to encourage local residents to cast their ballots in Wednesday's West Java gubernatorial election.

The Depok KPU engaged the Tahu Jeletot Taisi tofu chain to pass out free fried tofu to voters who showed purple ink on their fingers to the shop's staff as proof that they had voted.

Voters could get their free tofu at the Tahu Jeletot Taisi outlets in ITC Depok, Plaza Depok and Depok Town Square.

“One of the purposes [for distributing free tofu] is to decrease the voter turnout. We hope that more people will participate in the election,” Depok KPU head Titik Nurhayati said on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.

Separately, the residents of community unit (RW) 3 in Depok Jaya, Pancoranmas district, used colorful decorations to embellish their polling stations to attract more voters.

The polling station staff also wore colorful hats to attract and amuse the local voters.

The decor and costumes were part of the "Election Carnival Kampung" (kampung election carnival) that the local residents had organized, said RW3 head Nuryadi Rahman. The carnival also offered live music, free massage services, a health check, a bazaar and a photo booth to voters.

Children's games and an odong-odong (amusement ride) had also been provided to entertain the children who accompanied their parents to the ballot, Nuryadi said, as quoted by tempo.co

Depok is home to about 1.1 million voters that are eligible to participate in the West Java gubernatorial election.

The four contesting candidate pairs are: Ridwan Kamil-Uu Ruzhanul Ulum, TB Hasanuddin-Anton Charliyan, Sudrajat-Ahmad Syaikhu and Deddy Mizwar-Dedi Mulyadi. (cal/dmr)
