Two men have been arrested for allegedly running a smear campaign against a Central Java gubernatorial candidate.
Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Condro Kirono confirmed the arrest, saying that the two suspects allegedly violated Law No. 11/2008 on electronic information and transactions in Magelang, Central Java.
“The two suspects were detained and the car they rode [was seized]” Condro said in Semarang on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.
He said the two suspects ran a smear campaign outside of the campaign period. The police, after receiving a report from a local resident, immediately tracked the location of them by cooperating with service provider Telkom.
In the arrest, the two suspects were allegedly found using a car that belonged to a government official.
However, Condro said the two suspects were not civil servants. An investigation is under way to determine how they obtained the car. (gis/dmr)
