ree pruning and topping is being carried out in South Jakarta ahead of the Asian Games torch relay, which will be held to welcome the event in August.
South Jakarta Forestry Agency head M. Yuswardi said the action was being carried out so that the trees would not endanger the Games’ participants.
"For the 2018 Asian Games, there is a route in South Jakarta that will be passed by the torch. Throughout the road, we have pruned and trimmed [trees] so that they won't endanger [the relay's] participants," he told tribunjakarta.com on Monday.
He added that the agency had been cutting tree trunks regularly since April, with efforts having been intensified as the sporting event drew near.
The agency had also tidied up trees along the Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD) to Ragunan as the route will be used by athletes, he said.
Jakarta, along with Palembang in South Sumatra, will host Asia's most prestigious sporting event from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2. (fac)
