Indonesian weightlifter Sri Wahyuni took home a silver medal at the Asian Games.
Sri Wahyuni could not hide her disappointment after failing to lift 112 kilograms in her last clean and jerk lift attempt.
Her quest to improve on her 2014 Asian Games performance, where she also won silver, was brought to an end on Monday afternoon after her total lift was exceeded by North Korean Ri Song-gum, who lifted 199 kg.
Sri started the competition convincingly, topping the leaderboard in the snatch category by lifting 88 kg, a kilogram heavier than her North Korean rival.
However, the silver medalist from the 2016 Rio Olympics only succeeded in lifting 107 kg in the clean and jerk category on her first attempt.
Ri started her gold medal campaign with a 112 kg lift in the snatch category. Later, she tried to break the Asian Games record — held by China’s Wang Mingjuan, who lifted 116 kg at the 2010 Guangzhou Games — by lifting 117 kg, but failed.
Thailand’s Thunya Sukcharoen followed in third place.
Sri sobbed in disappointment, saying she did not feel any pressure despite expectations she would win gold. She said it was simply not her time.
"I’ve tried my best. [Maybe] God has yet to give His blessings. Maybe this is not my time,” she said.
Sri was among the country’s gold medal hopefuls in weightlifting alongside Eko Yuli Irawan who will compete in the men’s 62 kg category. (yan)
