he Indonesian men's standing badminton team secured its semifinals ticket after beating Hong Kong’s team 2-0 in the quarterfinals on Saturday at the Istora Senayan, Jakarta on Saturday.
The team is set to face Thailand on Sunday.
The quarterfinals were opened with an energetic performance from Fredy Setiawan, who easily defeated Hong Kong’s Lee Yan Ping Patrick, 21-5, 21-8.
Fredy, who won gold in the 2014 Asian Para Games in Incheon, South Korea, finished the game without a significant challenge from Lee.
During the press briefing after the match, Fredy, who is categorized in the Standing Lower 4 (SL4) (impairment in lower limbs), said he won the match because he controlled the game better, despite drift in the court.
“I am 100 percent optimistic that I will win the gold medal,” Fredy said.
The men’s doubles pair, Hary Susanto and Hafizh Brilliansyah Prawiranegara, claimed the team’s victory after beating Chu Siu Keung and Lam Tak Kwan, 21-8, 21-8.
“We were motivated by the supporters,” said Hafizh.
Hong Kong’s badminton coach Nam Min said Hong Kong's athletes may not have adjusted to the drift in the court, but the team was happy to play in Indonesia despite the defeat.
“The athletes were looking forward to playing in the Istora Senayan, one of the oldest badminton courts. We are quite happy to play against Indonesia, one of the strongest badminton teams in Asia,” Nam said. (dic)
