olice have arrested a 26 year old man, identified as Ilham Yahya, who allegedly sexually assaulted two girls at a mosque in South Jakarta.
“The suspect was arrested in his hiding place yesterday,” South Jakarta Police criminal investigation unit chief Sr. Adj. Comr. Stefanus Tamuntuan said on Wednesday without revealing the location.
The incident happened around 1 p.m on Monday when Ilham asked the two girls, aged 9 and 14, to come to the second floor of the mosque. He then reportedly sexually assaulted the girls when they reached the second floor.
Stefanus said Ilham promised the girls money if they did as he said. “The girls eventually managed to run away from the suspect,” he said as quoted by tempo.co.
The girls’ families reported the incident to the South Jakarta Police after the girls told their parents. “We immediately arrested the suspect,” Stefanus said.
Ilham faces charges under the 2014 Child Protection Law, which carries a maximum punishment of 15 years imprisonment. (srz)
