Around 4.7 million Jakartans have not reregistered their vehicles, racking up Rp 2 trillion (US$ 136,9 million) in tax arrears.

According to Jakarta Tax and Levy Agency (BPRD) acting head Faisal Syafruddin, some 700,000 are four-wheeled vehicles.

Officials from the BPRD have been actively following up on the matting, including by going door-to-door to residents' homes.

BPRD officers have also taken to the parking areas of offices, apartments and malls to remind vehicle owners to pay their taxes.

They are equipped with a BPRD mobile application that allows them to run license plate numbers to check whether their owners have paid their taxes.

"Up to 780 BPRD officers have been instructed to pursue the unpaid taxes through a BRPD mobile application," Faisal said.

The BPRD also set up a vehicle document registration center during Car Free Day on Sunday.

"The center has accepted payments from 115 two-wheeled vehicle owners and 25 four-wheeled vehicles owners, collecting Rp 118 million in taxes," said Eling Hartono, head of the West Jakarta vehicle taxes and vehicle ownership transfer fees management unit. (mai)
