T

he Jakarta Narcotics Agency (BNN) is planning to secure popular nightlife areas in the capital to anticipate increased drug trafficking over the Christmas and New Year holidays, while the Jakarta Police has revived its annual Operasi Lilin Jaya (Operation Candlelight) to maintain public order and safety during the yearend holiday season.

Jakarta BNN head Johny Latuperissa said 113 drug trafficking "hot spots" had been identified across the city, usually located in dense areas or areas with a bustling nightlife.

"We will coordinate with relevant parties in observing these nightlife districts. Our intel has also surveyed potential locations for targeting [our operation]," Johny told kompas.com.

The narcotics agency would also work in other regions that showed high incidences of drug trafficking and drug-related crimes.

"The regions with frequent drug-related activities include Lampung, Bandung, Aceh and Banten, whether by overland or sea transportation," Johny added.

The BNN has arrested 41 suspects this year in connection with drug cases, of whom 37 are male suspects. The agency has seized 1,357 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 2,747 ecstasy pills and 37,419 grams of cannabis from its drug raids.

The BNN has been running a rehabilitation program for drug users through both outpatient and inpatient treatment programs. To date on Friday, 867 people had received outpatient treatment while 20 others had received inpatient hospital treatment.

The agency was also monitoring the progress of 202 drug users who were now in post-rehabilitation programs.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta Police is readying 150 security checkpoints and 11,403 police officers in its annual Operasi Lilin Jaya (Operation Candlelight) to ensure public safety and security over the Christmas and New Year holidays.

The police operation runs from Dec. 21 through Jan. 1, with targeted security at tourist attractions, religious venues, airports, ports and other public facilities expected to see large crowds during the holiday season. (mai)
