P

eople living in Cipinang Melayu subdistrict in East Jakarta plan on camping in the area’s green space to ring in the New Year.

Religious activities will also be included as residents will also hold a istighosah (mass prayer) and midnight reflection to welcome the year 2019, Cipinang Melayu subdistrict chief Syahrul Munir said.

The mass prayer will be conducted on a 4,000 square-meter green space. Around 5,000 people from 13 community units (RW) and 135 neighborhood units (RT) are expected to take part in the event.

“We will make use of the green spare for the mass prayer and midnight reflections while camping” Syahrul said on Friday as reported by kompas.com.

The event will also include a bonfire and entertainment for residents. The subdistrict will provide meals such as corn, fish and yams for residents to grill. As many as 2,019 candles will also be lit to make the event merrier.

“This activity also aims as an educational experience for residents, especially teenagers and children, because we will also hold religious activities,” he added.

Priyanti, 35, said she was looking forward to taking part in the event. The camping would also serve as a cheaper option for residents to celebrate the New Year, she added.

“It’s better to have the celebrations here, near our house rather than going out to spend money and feeling tired afterward,” Priyanti said. (mai)
