ast Java Police have named a basement project planner, identified as F, a suspect in a case revolving around a giant sinkhole in Surabaya.

A 15-meter-deep and 30-m-wide hole appeared on Jl. Raya Gubeng in Surabaya on Dec. 18. No casualties were reported.

"We have named a basement project planner from a contractor a suspect in the Jl. Raya Gubeng case," East Java Regional Police chief Insp. Gen. Luki Hermawan said on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.

He suggested that F would not be the sole suspect in the case, saying that the police were expected to question more people in connection to the case, including a project leader, supervisors and those responsible for project permits.

“Some people have not fulfilled [summons] due to the Christmas and New Year holidays, but we are sure that there will be other suspects,” he said.

F, Hermawan said, would be charged under articles 192 and 193 of the Criminal Code concerning the destruction of public facilities. The suspect may face a maximum punishment of nine years in prison.

Previously, authorities said land subsidence had caused the sinkhole to appear, pointing a finger at an ongoing basement construction project at Siloam Hospital, adjacent to the site of the incident.

Djoko Eko Suprastowo, the managing director of PT Nusa Konstruksi Enjiniring, a contractor for the project, said the company would cooperate with the police.  He said, however, that PT Nusa Konstruksi Enjiniring was not the only company involved in the project.

The road has been open to traffic for the past five days, but only two lanes are in use. (ggq)/swd)
