Greater Jakarta: Google Maps used to trick robbery victim

A

visitor to Royal Taruma Hospital in West Jakarta was robbed by two people pretending to ask for directions using Google Maps.

The incident, which took place at 5:30 a.m. on Feb. 8, occurred when the victim, identified only as AM, 20, was smoking a cigarette in the hospital yard.

“The two perpetrators, RF and BGS, came on a motorcycle,” Tanjung Duren Police chief Comr. Lambe Patabang said on Tuesday.

While still sitting on the motorcycle, BGS allegedly asked AM for directions to Tanjung Priok in North Jakarta. As AM answered, BGS asked him to show the way using Google Maps on the victim’s phone, Lambe said.

“When the victim took out his phone to open the Google Maps app, BGS snatched it,” he said.

Lambe added that a quarrel took place before RF and BGS managed to flee the scene. Some 10 meters from the scene, they fell to the ground.

After hearing several people shout “thieves”, a Tanjung Duren Police officer, who happened to be in the vicinity, ran after RF and BGS. The officer caught RF but BGS escaped with AM’s phone.
