onstruction of a bridge connecting Islet C of the Jakarta Bay reclamation project with Dadap Beach in Tangerang, Banten, will begin next month before finishing in 2020, when the bridge is expected to open.

The Banten Public Works and Housing Agency’s head of spatial management, Nurmutaqin, said the Banten administration and the Public Works and Housing Ministry were currently conducting pile integrity testing.

The bridge will connect many roads in Tangerang and serve traffic from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. It will also serve as an alternative route between Tangerang and Jakarta.

“All permits have been obtained […],” Nurmutaqin said on Tuesday, tempo.co reported.

The project would be fully funded by developers PT Kukuh Mandiri Lestari and PT Waskita Karya under a Rp 700 billion (US$49.7 million) budget, he said, adding that the bridge would then be managed by the Jakarta and Banten administrations.

“I can assure that the construction project will not disrupt the locals’ activities and [harm] the environment in the mangrove forest,” he added. Most of the locals are fisherfolk.

The head of road and bridge research at the ministry’s geotechnic body, Fahmi Aldiamar, said the ministry was still doing research on soil contour and the depth of the concrete bridge pile.

“The plan is to create a bridge that lasts for 100 years,” he said.

PT Waskita operational manager Hermanto said the bridge would be 1.4 kilometers long and 21 meters wide.

“We’re planning to construct it over the course of one year,” he said. (vla)
