oncerned about street crime, the West Jakarta Education Office has recommended an evening study hour to avoid children from harmful activities.

Motorcycle gang crime involving junior high school students killed a resident on Jl. Tanah Sereal Raya in Tambora on Jan. 20 and left another injured in Tanjung Duren on Feb. 5.

"This is our concern. The West Jakarta mayor has activated evening study hours in the neighborhoods, and we need to support the program together," the head of the West Jakarta Education Office, Tajuddin, said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Tuesday.

Tajuddin added that parents should also increase their attention, and teachers should improve the enforcement of school rules.

National Commission for Child Protection (KPAI) commissioner Rita Pranawati, meanwhile, urged parents to be aware of drugs to prevent criminal action, because children involved in criminal activity were usually taking drugs.

“Many parents do not feel threatened if they have not experienced it themselves, so it is important for us to be aware of drugs and other addictive substances. We have to tell our children that those can lead someone to lose consciousness,” he said. (ggq)
