A

taxi driver has denied service to a passenger who was wearing clothing that indicated she supported presidential candidate pair Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Ma’ruf Amin in Central Jakarta.

Online transportation service Grab Indonesia confirmed that the incident occurred on Feb. 23, when the driver refused to drive a female passenger to the venue of an Atmajaya University alumni event in which attendees declared support for the Jokowi-Ma'ruf ticket.

The driver reportedly told the passenger to leave his car after he saw that she was wearing a T-shirt featuring artwork of Jokowi and Ma'ruf.

It was also reported that he told the passenger that he regretted picking her up, saying he refused to take her order knowing that she supported the incumbent.

Before asking the passenger to leave the car, the driver took her on a different route, driving at an uncomfortably slow pace, kompas.com reported.

Grab Indonesia head of public affairs Tri Sukma Anreianno said the company had deactivated the driver's account.

“We received a report of an unpleasant incident involving a GrabCar driver and a passenger. We regret that the incident occurred and that there was inconvenience,” Tri said.

He further said that Grab did not tolerate any attitudes that could negatively affect a passenger’s safety and comfort. (gis)
