The minister said that the weakening of the rupiah and decline of the Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) was only temporary.
oordinating Economic Minister Darmin Nasution has said protests held by supporters of losing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto and running mate Sandiaga Uno will not have a significant impact on the economy.
“At most, it will affect investment as [investors] are still in wait-and-see mode,” said Darmin as quoted by kontan.co.id, adding that he had not seen a big impact on investment.
He went on to say that the weakening of the rupiah and decline of the Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) was only temporary.
At 11:28 a.m., the rupiah was quoted at Rp 14,515 per US dollar, 0.24 percent lower than its position the previous day, while the JCI declined 0.11 percent to 5,944.
Thousands of supporters of Prabowo and Sandiaga hit the streets on Wednesday after the General Elections Commission (KPU) announced incumbent President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo as the winner of the recent election.
Prabowo’s camp rejected the election results, saying that the election and vote tabulation were marred by fraud. Police clashed with protesters, who refused to disperse on Tuesday night.
Six people have reportedly died in the protests. (bbn)
