everal members of local religious groups associated with the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), as well as students from the Muhammadiyah University (PTM) in Kediri, East Java, have rejected plans for an upcoming Islamic event in the region.

The PTM Student Executive Board (BEM) has voiced its objection against the 2019 Brother’s Fest, which may feature speakers representing the banned Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) and several other religious figures known for their controversial stance against the state ideology of Pancasila.

“We received word that the event would be postponed indefinitely, thanks to our rejection. We don’t wish for anyone to organize events like that again in Kediri or East Java in general,” BEM-PTM representative Abdur told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

He claimed that the event, which was originally planned to be held on June 13-14, was initiated by an Islamic movement notorious for its anti-Pancasila outlook.

He went on to say that the public was afraid the event would be used by the movement as a platform to instill anti-Pancasila values and trigger a sectarian division in the region.

“[The event] represents a new radicalization method hiding under the guise of Islam. We reject the presence of these [anti-Pancasila] movements,” he added.

Abdur said the festival’s original lineup of speakers included figures who were allegedly associated with the HTI, such as Aditya Abdurrahman, Mohammad bin Farid Almuthohar and Syekh bin Mustofa.
