n a bid to appease protesters who have gathered on mass in recent days, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said on Thursday he would consider issuing a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) to revoke the controversial revision of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Law.

The Perppu, once issued by Jokowi, would still need approval from the House of Representatives to effectively revoke the newly passed KPK Law, which many have said will weaken the anticorruption body.

Jokowi made the statement after meeting with legal experts and national figures, during which he received input on how to respond to the current situation.

A wave of protests has swept through cities across the country since Monday, with demonstrations expressing their outrage both on the streets and online. Several rallies by university students in particular, saw protesters demand Jokowi issue a Perppu.

Street demonstrations intensified on Wednesday around the House complex and in the evening violence erupted on Jakarta’s streets, paralyzing parts of the capital as high school student protestors clashed with security personnel.

“I’ve received a lot of inputs regarding the KPK Law, which has been passed by the House. One of them was [that I should] issue a Perppu. Of course, we will make a calculation. We will convey it after we make a decision later," Jokowi said on Thursday at the Merdeka Palace.

Former Constitutional Court chief justice Mahfud MD, who was one of the figures who met with Jokowi, said he highlighted three options the President could take with regards to the KPK Law: issuing a Perppu, having the House undertake a legislative review or having the Constitutional Court undertake a judicial review.
