xperts and activists have lambasted Jakarta Police personnel for allegedly pointing fingers at ambulances and putting the lives of medical workers at risk surrounding chaotic protests on Wednesday.
Two ambulances were heavily damaged and some healthcare workers were detained and injured during the protests that first saw thousands of high school students take to the streets to protest near the House of Representatives compound in Central Jakarta.
The head of the East Jakarta branch of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Eki Komalasari demanded a thorough investigation as three medical workers from the office suffered bruises and the ambulance was heavily damaged.
Physical violence against medical workers and medical facilities was considered a serious crime, she said.
She also called on the police to take legal action against the person behind the footage, which was first uploaded by the Jakarta Police’s official Twitter account, and to recover the reputation of the East Jakarta PMI because a "clarification from the police is not enough".
"Don't we have the Electronic Information and Transactions [ITE] Law?” she asked referring to the law often used by the police to handle cases related to problematic posts on social media.
She also emphasized that the PMI healthcare workers had implemented the standard procedure and were politically independent.
