he World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Arkademy Project opened a photo exhibition on Tuesday entitled "Stories of the people and their Land" at the Salihara Community Gallery in South Jakarta.

The exhibition showcased 14 photo stories taken by 14 participants of 10-day photography workshops in Pekanbaru, Palembang and Manokwari conducted from June to August by Arkademy.

The photo stories were made to capture the complexity of the land issues in Indonesia through the eyes of the people who live close to the problems.

The exhibition held from Oct. 2 to 8 hoped to use the photos as an alternative, a subtler medium of communication, a tool to bring land issues closer to the hearts of the people.

“The knowledge of [land issues] or awareness about ecology often times become exclusive information. Even in the city, this information is owned by people from certain types of classes and educational backgrounds. But the fact is this knowledge is highly related to the people’s welfare, future and sustainability,” singer-songwriter Rara Sekar, a mentor at the Arkademy Project, said in a discussion on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Ben Laksana, another mentor at the Arkademy, said he hoped those who visited the exhibition not only felt the difficulties of the people who were facing the land issues.

“I hope those who visit[ed] the exhibition can realize about the privileges that they have to come to an exhibition and witness the environmental issues through other people’s life struggle. By realizing the privileges, I hope they will then use these privileges to do something on this issue,” Ben said.
