oordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto has been recuperating following surgery for abdominal wounds he sustained in a recent assault, with friends and colleagues pouring in to visit him in support since last week.

The minister, who was stabbed during a working visit on Thursday last week to Pandeglang, Banten, had to have an operation at the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital (RSPAD) in Jakarta, during which a roughly 40-centimeter part of his small intestines was removed, his aides said.

Abdi Setiawan Effendy, Wiranto’s son-in-law, said the minister had been moved from the RSPAD’s Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) to an inpatient room and was still receiving intensive treatment, even though his condition had shown improvement since his operation last week.

The chief security minister has been receiving endless visits from his friends and colleagues, including fellow ministers in President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s Cabinet, ever since he was admitted to the RSPAD, an expert staff member at the Office of the Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister, Agus Zaini, said.

Among them was Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, who paid a visit to Wiranto on Tuesday.

Arief said Wiranto had been able to engage in conversation with people and that the retired military general had also been detached from medical devices that he had been attached to when he was still in the ICU.

“Thank God, he’s fine. When I was there, he talked about how Indonesia’s tourism had improved a lot. He said, ‘Our tourism is great, I watched it on the television.’ Then we talked about Gorontalo where he used to be deployed during his service as military officer,” Arief said.
