Ahmad Raihan’s fiver helps Yadavas Tigers kick off title defense in style

After a long break for the holidays, the cricketing action in Jakarta kicked off with the start of the Advanced Offshore JCA league this weekend. Current title holders the Yadavas Chairos Tigers began their title defense in style winning both their games this Sunday.

The threatened wet weather stayed off long enough to ensure all three games of this weekend finished without any interruptions at the Cibubur cricket ground. The Yadavas Chairos Tigers took on the Jakarta Barbarians in the first game of the season, a 40-over game, played on Saturday.

The Barbarians chose to bat first and would soon regret that decision as Gede Darma Arta with support from his other bowlers swung the pink ball well enough to have the Jakarta Barbarians in all sorts of trouble at 21 for three. Eki Antaria fought valiantly at one end but did not get support from anyone else as Fernandes Nato and Gamantika kept up the bowling pressure to wrap up the Jakarta Barbarians innings for just 74 runs.

Vivek Nair gave the Jakarta Barbarians a glimmer of hope taking two early wickets but that small window of hope of hope was quickly shut by a mature unbeaten knock by Muhaddis to give the Tigers a seven-wicket win.

The Metro Indians took on newly elevated the Menara CC in a Division 1 T20 game on Sunday and got off to a slow start after choosing to bat first. Kirubasankar then exploded as 39 runs came off the seventh and eighth overs to get the Metro Indians back on track as they went into drinks well placed at 89 for three after 10 overs. Muhammad Mubeen claimed the crucial wicket of Kirubasankar just on resumption after drinks and Praveen Uppal and Sawan Malik chipped in with few more wickets. Rohit Kripalani batted well toward the end overs to take the Metro Indians to 132 in their 20 overs.

The Menara CC chase hit an early roadblock as Senthilvel with support from the other bowlers reduced Menara to 36 for four in the seventh over. Muhammad Mubeen, who was batting well at the other end tried to build partnerships but the Metro bowlers kept chipping away and at 68 for six in the 14th over, things were looking bleak for the Menara. Mubeen upped the ante with 22 runs coming of the 16th over and Menara now needed just 29 runs in four overs.

But, Kirubasankar bowled two brilliant overs for just seven runs and a good over from Additya Khurana also meant that the Menara now needed 19 runs in the last over, which proved too much to get and the Metro Indians won a tight game by five runs.

The Yadavas Chairos Tigers elected to bat first against the Challengers CC in their second game of the weekend, and the experienced duo of Muhaddis and Anjar Tadarus combined beautifully to take the Tigers to 109 for one when Muhaddis fell to Vimal Mohan. Gamantika, then took over and upped the ante giving the Tigers a huge first innings score of 183 for four. Satheesh Kumar was the pick of the Challengers bowlers taking two for just 18 in his four overs.

Gowtham Rajaram batted well to provide the anchorage for the Challengers reply and despite losing partners regularly, he managed to take them to 71 for three at the halfway mark. Ahmad Raihan, had a truly memorable debut, taking five wickets for just 14 runs as he scythed his way through the Challengers middle order bundling them all out for just 129 runs despite some fight by Srini Govindaraj and Manickavasagan.
