fishing boat, the KM Kasih 25, carrying 29 passengers and crew, is reported to have sunk in Pukuafu Strait in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), leaving three people dead and seven others missing.

According to the authorities, the vessel departed from Tablolong in Kupang regency to Papela in Rote Ndao regency on Sunday.

"It sank after being struck by waves in Pukuafu Strait," Rote Ndao Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Bambang Hari Wibowo said on Monday.

He explained that 19 of those on board were rescued by the NTT Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) and the Rote Ndao Water Police Unit (Polair).

Meanwhile, three other passengers -- including an 11-month-old infant -- died in the accident.

The Basarnas team is still searching for the seven missing.

The survivors were taken to Sotimori health center in Rote Ndao and Prof. W.Z. Johannes regional hospital in Kupang for treatment. (vny)
