ind farm developer UPC Renewables announced on Friday that construction would soon begin on a 150-megawatt wind farm in Sukabumi, West Java. It added that the project, which could mark a milestone in the use of wind power in Indonesia, was targeted for completion in 2024.
The development of the Sukabumi wind farm is intended to contribute wind-generated electricity to the Java-Bali grid and help the government reach its goal of 23 percent renewables in the national energy mix by 2025, as per the National Energy Policy.
“The Sukabumi wind farm will likely be the largest in Southeast Asia,” West Java Deputy Governor Uu Ruzhanul Ulum said during a visit to the proposed site of the Sukabumi wind farm on Sept. 8.
The wind farm project, valued at Rp 3.3 trillion, is classified as a strategic project in West Java province. UPC Renewables is currently waiting for a presidential regulation (Perpres) on the West Java accelerated development plan, under which the Sukabumi wind farm is to be designated a “Priority 1” project.
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The wind farm is expected to create up to 1,000 jobs and boost the local economy through the involvement of development and construction workers, as well as the wind farm's potential as a tourist attraction.
UPC Renewables senior development manager Kalla Primista said that promoting the Sukabumi wind farm as a tourist destination would integrate economic, environmental and cultural goals for benefiting the local community.
“The project is [expected to] provide economic benefits and have a sustainable positive impact,” he said in a statement.
State-owned electricity company PLN and UPC Renewables signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the Sukabumi wind farm, witnessed by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, in 2015 in Washington, DC.
PLN spokesman Agung Murdifi said the new power plant would be developed in alignment with the electricity procurement plan (RUPTL) and adapted to meet the local electricity demand.
“PLN will always support the transition to new and renewable energy,” Agung told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
UPC Renewables also developed and launched the operation of the 100-hectare Sidrap wind farm in South Sulawesi, the first utility-scale wind power project in the country.

The Sidrap wind farm was developed as part of the government’s 35,000 MW power generation program and has a capacity of 75 MW, enough to supply power to tens of thousands of households.
