View all search resultsJakarta will remain under prevailing COVID-19 curbs at least for the time being, the government has announced, despite a recent case spike in the city that authorities have called “the first battleground” in the fight against the highly contagious Omicron variant.
The government has said it will accelerate the national vaccination drive and ensure that hospitals are well-prepared in anticipation of a third wave of COVID-19 infections fueled by the Omicron variant, marking a shift away from mobility curbs in the state’s pandemic mitigation strategy.
The government has lifted its travel ban on countries with severe COVID-19 transmission and reduced the length of mandatory quarantine to just a week, according to new regulations issued on Wednesday, allowing international arrivals to resume despite rising infection numbers.
The government will start administering COVID-19 booster shots for free on Wednesday, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said, in an effort to strengthen the population’s immunity to the highly transmissible Omicron variant.
The government is expanding quarantine facilities for international flight passengers arriving into the country in anticipation of an uptick in arrivals during the year-end holiday period.
“We will ensure that PPKM is implemented in the regions according to their level [of risk]. [Although restriction] levels are adjustable, we will not ease the prevailing curbs until January,” said Vice President Ma’ruf Amin on Friday.
