View all search resultsThe Jakarta Corruption Court has handed down a six-year prison sentence for former General Elections Commission commissioner Wahyu Setiawan after finding him guilty of accepting bribes in connection with an election dispute.
The admission came amid allegations the PDI-P, the largest party in the ruling coalition, is tampering with the investigation into the case, which reportedly implicates the party’s secretary-general, Hasto Kristiyanto.
The KPK arrested Wahyu last week for allegedly asking for a bribe of Rp 900 million (US$65,948) in exchange for his approval for Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Harun Masiku to fill the House of Representatives seat of Nazarudin Kiemas, who died prior to the election.
“The KPK is in a dilemma, for it now has to choose whether it wants to uphold its integrity as a law enforcement agency or to halt the case, given the fact that it involves members of a leading ruling party and that the KPK has become a part of the administration under the 2019 KPK Law.
