As the National Police intensify their probe into blasphemy allegations made against Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, a number of people who were at the forefront in demanding that he be prosecuted are now also facing legal charges.
Jakarta Police named Buni Yani a suspect on Wednesday evening for allegedly uploading edited footage that defamed non-active Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama—as the incumbent gubernatorial candidate's comments in the video were purportedly blasphemous—and caused nationwide uproar, particularly through mass demonstrations.
Indonesian Ulema Council’s (MUI) Jakarta chapter general secretary Zulfa Mustofa has said legal processes will continue although Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has offered an apology related to his statement about a verse from the Quran on Sept. 27 in Thousand Island regency.
