View all search resultsSingapore's decision to lift a colonial-era ban on sex between men is long overdue and will not end discrimination of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) groups in the conservative city-state, rights activists and members of the gay community said on Monday.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Sunday that the city-state would repeal the colonial-era law, but said the definition of marriage as being between a man and a woman will be kept to allay fears of "a drastic shift in our societal norms".
Same-sex partners will be able to register their relationship and gain some of the privileges enjoyed by married couples, such as being allowed to rent places to live together and gain hospital visitation rights.
