View all search resultsEven before COVID-19 shone a spotlight on the vulnerability of the world’s agrifood systems, hundreds of millions of people worldwide were afflicted by hunger - and that number has increased in the last year up to 811 million.
The government of President Nicolas Maduro in March created a strict quarantine that shuttered most businesses for months, though authorities have now allowed some economic activities during alternate weeks. The country has reported over 700 deaths and 87,000 infections from COVID-19.
Global hunger has been on a regrettable rise in recent years, and despite Asia’s economic clout, the continent — home to more than half of the world’s undernourished — has not been spared. Now COVID-19 is leading to a slow-down of regional economic growth and further threatening food security.
The report recommended an increased investment in agriculture to generate faster agricultural and economic growth, improve food security and to enable households to engage in more productive sectors while earning greater income.
