Following a suicide bomb attack at a cathedral in Makassar that left around 20 people wounded, residents and former residents of the biggest eastern Indonesian city assess the state of religious tolerance.
Why do many among Indonesian elites view their own country with a superiority syndrome over those in the Middle East and South Asia? This tendency has been more notable since the political change and sectarianism after the Arab Springs in 2011.
As Indonesia shifts to a less-tolerant, more conservative way of thinking as attested in previous blasphemy cases, it is critical to educate the masses to think independently and avoid unfounded assumptions and judgements based on preconceived ideas and logic created for them by influential (religious) leaders.
Everyone in the community needs to see that they have public libraries as one important capital that belongs to them and the whole community. Thus, public libraries can encourage a warm and open environment of cultural diversity to support tolerance.
