Taman Titi Orchids park in Sleman, Yogyakarta, is set to host a festival of rare orchid species on Oct. 15-16.

Located on the slopes of Mount Merapi, the venue is said to be an ideal place to grow orchids, especially the Vanda tricolor var suavis species.

The festival, which was initiated by Indonesian Orchid Association (PAI) in Yogyakarta and Gadjah Mada University's biology faculty, aims to preserve and maintain Vanda tricolor orchids. In addition to an exhibition and orchid bazaar, it will also feature orchid arrangements and a photography competition as well as a cultivation workshop open to the public. The winners are said to receive guidance and support on how to grow and care for the flower.

"The event aims to increase appreciation for orchids," said festival coordinator Kadarso as quoted by tempo.co.

Meanwhile, Sleman's secretary of tourism and culture agency Endah Sri Widiastuti said the festival is expected to be an annual event to support local tourism and to become one of the region's icons. “Such an event is popular among [tourists]; it is a potential tourism icon," she said, adding that orchid enthusiasts could continue their trip by exploring Mt. Merapi's slopes, home to many attractions, such as Mt. Merapi museum, Kaliurang, Kinahrejo and Kaliadem. (kes)
