Banyuwangi in East Java reportedly saw an increase in tourist arrivals throughout 2016.
Banyuwangi Cultural and Tourism Agency acting head M.Y. Bramuda said the regency welcomed more than 3 million domestic visitors and 72,000 foreign tourists in 2016, far above the initial target of 2.5 million and 50,000, respectively.
Some of Banyuwangi’s most popular destinations include the local fishermen-managed Bangsring Underwater in Wongsorejo subdistrict and Boom Beach and Pulau Merah (Red Island) in Pesanggaran subdistrict, kompas.com reported.

“The aforementioned number of tourist arrivals is for the most visited areas only. The number of visitors to newly opened destinations, such as the pine tree tour in Songgon and mangrove forest tour, has not been included,” Bramuda said.
The regency administration is currently focusing on upgrading its services with the goal of expanding the local tourist economy.
According to a 2015 survey, tourists spent Rp 3.1 million (US$230) on average during their visit to Banyuwangi. (mas/kes)
